We Need Braille (We Are Young parody)

Do you remember Precious Perez’s performance of I Will Never Ever Live Without My Cane?  Well, she has done it again!

National Braille Press challenged Precious to write a song about braille.  Precious decided to write another parody, choosing We Are Young, by the American band, Fun.  Enjoy!

And here are the lyrics!

Give me a second I,
I need to get my story straight
My friends are sitting around having a heated UEB debate,
My TVI’s talking to me just across the table
My seat’s been occupied by all the print papers I’ve labeled.
I know I learned the Braille code years ago,
I know it’s not easy to forget,
But between the symbols and contractions
The Nemeth and music notation, you know
I’m trying hard to stay on track.
So if by the time, reading mediums change
And braille gets discredited out loud,
I’ll counter the doubt.
Because
We need braille
Let’s raise the literacy rate higher
We can burn brighter than the sun
Because
We need braille
Let’s raise the literacy rate higher
We can burn brighter than the sun
Now I know that it’s not
All that you got
I guess that I, I just thought,
Some people believe audio is all they need,
But if their spelling’s bad,
’cause they’re missing what they never had.
Then they’ll realize that they shd’ve learned from the start.
Because
We need braille
Let’s raise the literacy rate higher
We can burn brighter than the sun
Because
We need braille
Let’s raise the literacy rate higher
We can burn brighter than the sun
We’ll need Braille for life
Yeah
We’ll need braille for life
We’ll need Braille for life
Yeah, we’ll need braille for life.
NBP is on my side
We have no reason to run
Because we all know we’ll need braille for life.
It’s the only way,
We independently read and write.
Without worrying about what’ll happen if power goes out.
Because
We need braille
Let’s raise the literacy rate higher
We can burn brighter than the sun
Because
We need braille
Let’s raise the literacy rate higher
We can burn brighter than the sun
So if by the time reading mediums change
And braille gets discredited out loud
I’ll sit at my Brailler and write.

Talking Information Center Debut!

A few weeks ago, Jennifer and Ron from the Talking Information Center Network came to one of our Monday meetings to set up a studio for us to record spots for their Teen program.  They brought a computer and a very cool microphone and now we can produce for their show!  We are very excited about this collaboration!

Daisy and Precious came to ViStars this past Monday ready to record and each uploaded a story.  Both stories were aired as part of the TIC AM Update show with Ron and Bob on March 12th.  Here is a clip of the show – enjoy!

Weekend reading :)

Enjoy these two great reads- the first is from SIKids about Lex Gillette, a track & field star who is blind and the second article is about guides and athletes and the importance of their relationship.

Update from ViStars Jan. 27th

Yesterday was a full afternoon of FUN! As one of our annual community service projects, we spent time creating Valentines to send to deployed US soldiers. We love this project for Hugs for Soldiers because we are able to show our gratitude for service members and brighten someones day – all while spending social time with each other :)
Last year we were featured on the HFS website: http://www.hugsforsoldiers.org/node/895

We then enjoyed a delicious and healthy dinner of English muffin pizzas, carrots and cucumbers with homemade hummus before practice! Thank you to Renia & Ms Peters (aka the Eatz Committee) for planning! It’s always nice to work on our independent living cooking skills!

Last but certainly not least was the start of winter goalball season!! We welcomed two new players, Chris and James. We are so psyched to have these two join our team! For our returning athletes, it sure is great to be back out on the court. Excellent job with warm-up, drills and scrimmages. See everyone next week! Thank you to coaches, parents, family, friends, Malden Recreation Center and supporting communities for making the ViStars goalball program possible!
